Pioneer Graves

Welcome to my Pioneer Graves Project site. This is a collection of photos I've taken over the years in the old, sometimes neglected cemeteries of the Western U.S. mining towns. Most are from the gold towns in California along Highway 49, but there are also many from the deserts, Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and a few other states. Coulterville Public Cemetery

Coulterville Public Cemetery. Coulterville is on Highways 49 and 132, about 50 miles east of Modesto. I had driven through this small, dying town a number of times and never knew this cemetery existed until one day when I happened to meet and talk with a man who lived in the town. He is the one who described the place as "a small, dying town", because of a new law prohibiting tour buses on this portion of Highway 49, bypassing the town and all but completely eliminating tourism. When I mentioned an interest in old, historic cemeteries, he told me about this one. I have since visited it several times, making a point to stop for a walk through it every time I'm in the area.
