Pioneer Graves

Welcome to my Pioneer Graves Project site. This is a collection of photos I've taken over the years in the old, sometimes neglected cemeteries of the Western U.S. mining towns. Most are from the gold towns in California along Highway 49, but there are also many from the deserts, Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and a few other states. Diamond Springs Graveyard

While driving through Diamond Springs on my way to Placerville one day, I happened to notice a small obelisk on a low hill next to Highway 49. I stopped to investigate, and found this tiny graveyard. There was something about it that struck me as a bit odd, and I finally figured out what it is. There is no fence around it! It seems more like a small park in the middle of a close-knit neighborhood. All currently marked grave sites are represented here.

Diamond Springs Odd Fellows Cemetery

My topo maps showed a cemetery here in Diamond Springs, near the small graveyard I had discovered about a year earlier. I drove around a few side streets looking for it, and eventually found it. I haven't spent much time here yet, since the day I found it was very hot, and the cemetery was full of foxtails and thistle (as are the majority of the cemeteries in California's Gold Country). I need to get back here and work on it some more.
