On Highways 49 and 88, Jackson is the county seat of Amador County in California's Gold Country, and the home of the Kennedy and Argonaut Mines. This is the town I stay in when I'm travelling through this area. If you plan to visit, stay at the Amador Motel on Kennedy Flats Road. Tell Jeff and Tracy I sent you, and they'll treat you right (not that they wouldn't otherwise, of course). You might also notice a couple of my framed photographs on display in their lobby. Jackson has a reputation of being a rough and lawless town, with gambling and prostitution thriving right up into the 1950's. This being the county seat and one of the largest towns on Highway 49, the cemeteries here are also large and very active. New grave sites exist right alongside the old. Considering the amount of time I spend in this city, you would think this was the one cemetery I was closest to completing. I've actually only stopped here once, and not for long then because of the heat. Someone also apparently called the police on me while I was there, for some reason. As I was driving away, a cop on a bike, followed shortly by a squad car, came tearing through the cemetery, headed to where I had been. I was the only person there (the only living person, anyway), so it must have been me they were looking for, though I can't imagine what they thought I was doing wrong. One of these days I'll get back to work on this one.
