Wow....how sad! I am from NJ and had worked here during the winter of 1990/91. I had no idea that it was no longer a ski resort. I spent a lot of time working that ski lift. The views from up there were unbelievable. I have some great memories up there, some freezing ones too. Thanks for posting your pictures!

Many years ago I used to camp in this cabin... found it on my own much the same way you did. One day when I visited, it had been very badly vandalized. Based on its historical significance, the Forest Service rehabilitated the cabin using the original materials and new cedar shakes made in the same fashion as the originals (hand tools only). They did a fine job, as the cabin in your pictures looks far, far better than it did on that sad day years ago. The cedar shakes will weather soon enough and, provided no other criminals stumble upon it, it will look like its old self again. Thanks for the pictures. Lots of memories.

Good skiing? Those poles are for the Starbucks crowd

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean, but those are trekking poles, not ski poles. They save a lot of wear and tear on my bad knees.

Yes, I know you meant to be sarcastic... You failed. I'd rather protect my aging bones and joints than attempt to impress some anonymous coward who won't even put his name to his comments.

I'll always bring my trekking poles with me on future hikes. And I'll also stop at Starbucks once or twice a month for my non-fat venti mocha, no whip...

Thanks for your comment, anyway.

I last drove that road in about 2000 if it is the same one Im thinking of...so it isnt that old and abandoned. It is in one of my old climbing guide books and goes from the campground road, past the base of the Pacifico rock formation, and then south west to join back up with the main graded road (3n17?).

That sounds like the right direction. It's probably the same road you're thinking of. It was pretty overgrown in places, which led me to add that "old and abandoned" disclaimer.

I have been up to Pacifico a few times. I, along with a man I met on my last trip with a disabled daughter, were quite disappointed to see the dirt road shut down (years ago now) that went from the campground to the top. It was one of the only local spots that he could take his daughter to so she could watch him rock climb. It is a very beautiful area with a great view esp. from the very top of the rock formation.

It's closed every year from May to November. And, actually even though this hike took place in April, the road was already open. I know this because I drove it that day. I had followed the road back down from the summit and when I got back to the car I realized I had dropped my jacket somewhere after I left the summit. I didn't want to do the hike all over again, so I fired up the car and drove all the way back to the summit. I found my jacket only a few hundred feet from where I had left the campground at the top. The road was a little rough on my 2004 Chevy Cavalier LS, but she spends more time offroad than most SUVs, so she's kind of used to it... LOL
